Ryther Child Center League
Since 1936, the Ryther Child Center League has been supporting the work and children of Ryther Child Center. The League is an auxiliary volunteer group comprised of around 24 groups scattered throughout the Puget Sound region. For 60 years, League members have supported the children and programs at Ryther Child Center through fundraising, volunteer work and financial donations to the Center. The League is a separate 501(c)(3) organization, run by a volunteer Board of Directors.
Members come from all walks of life - businesspeople, teachers, stay-at-home parents, students, civic leaders and more. Some have been involved with the League for 40 or more years; others are just starting out, forming their own units with friends, family or co-workers.
The benefits of membership are many. Members form close and often long-term bonds with the others in their unit. League members learn about the challenges facing our community's children, and take a leadership role in providing solutions. Most of all, League members enjoy providing those “touches of home” that Ryther's kids have often missed.
Today the Ryther League continues to build upon its extraordinary legacy of support and partnership with Ryther Child Center.
Current League activities include:
- The Hope Auction is a gala dinner with silent and live auctions held each March. This year's Hope Auction at the Seattle Waterfront Marriott raised over $70,000.
- The R-Shoppe is a volunteer-run thrift shop located at 5435 Ballard Avenue. All proceeds benefit Ryther's programs.
- Calico Unit's ongoing quilt-making project has created over 100 hand-made quilts for the children at Ryther's Acute Stabilization Program cottage.
- League members bring dozens of home-baked cookies to Ryther every week, providing that special “touch of home” that we want all Ryther's kids to experience. For birthdays, League members donate made-to-order birthday cakes and candles.
- The Holiday Store is run by League volunteers and stocked with gifts donated by League members. Each year, Ryther kids can choose free gifts from the store to give to their families and friends.
- Individual League groups run fund raisers ranging from crafts sales and bazaars to holiday luncheons, bingo nights and wine tastings.
