Meet our donors:
Sally and Wally Campbell
Mother Ryther Legacy Society Member
Sally and her husband Wally were very intentional about joining the Mother Ryther Legacy Society. Both were committed to helping underserved youth, Wally with the YMCA and Camp Orkila, the youth camp he and his family attended as children, and Sally with the Ryther League. Each generously committed their talents, resources, and countless volunteer hours to make a meaningful impact on these causes.
Sally was especially moved by the children sent to Ryther who were housed in cottages earlier as young as 5 or 6 years of age and up to 18 years old all suffering from neglect, abuse, and trauma. She joined the Ryther Child Center League and the Noel Unit to help provide special services for the children who were receiving therapy and schooling in a very caring environment. The long-term trauma of the neglect and abuse that so many had endured was a stark contrast to the privilege and protection she and Wally provided their sons and was the reason for volunteering over 60 years with the Ryther League. She shares this about why you should consider making a planned gift to Ryther:
“As life becomes increasingly challenging with mental health and addiction issues children will continue to have more complex issues. Ryther is the gold standard organization equipped with the staff and the current therapies to provide healing and hope. We were fortunate enough to avoid many of the problems others face. We hope our gift helps Ryther to continue giving hope in our community to the children who need it most.”
Connie and Richard DelMissier
Mother Ryther Legacy Society Member
Long-time Ryther Noel Unit League member, Connie has been dedicated to supporting Ryther for over 60 years; whether by baking birthday cakes, making holiday baskets, planning the annual bazaar, or the over 25 Noel Unit luncheons she helped with, Connie worked tirelessly to support the children of Ryther. Connie describes how she and her husband Dick decided to make a planned gift to Ryther:
"Our daily lives have been changed in wonderful and meaningful ways, and our family members' lives have also been impacted by our involvement at Ryther.
In 1885, when Olive Ryther took in the four children of a neighbor, promising the woman on her deathbed that these children would be raised as her own, a legacy began. "Mother Ryther" was tenacious and passionate about her work, and in her lifetime, she cared for over 3,000 local children who had nowhere else to turn. She provided them the basics along with a sense of being loved. While times are different today, now more than ever, children who are struggling need a place to find treatment, care, and hope. To ensure our legacy continues and children in our community have the care they need, my husband, Dick, and I have let Ryther know that we have included Ryther in our estate planning.
If you're considering joining us in making a planned gift to Ryther. I encourage you to schedule a visit to the campus, take the opportunity to learn about the programs firsthand and think about what it would be worth to help ensure that Ryther can continue to fulfill its purpose for many years to come. I think you'll agree: A gift to Ryther is an excellent investment in the health of our youth in our community."
Gifts by will are one of Ryther's most important sources of support. Unrestricted gifts give us the greatest flexibility to use funds where they are most needed.
You may leave Ryther:
A stated dollar amount
A percentage of your residual estate (what remains after gifts to loved ones and expenses have been paid)

Naming Ryther as a beneficiary on your retirement account or life insurance policy is a simple and powerful way to support the lifesaving work of our organization without changing your will or living trust. Beneficiary designation gifts pass directly to Ryther without going through the probate process and go right to work to help us provide lifesaving medical care.
Retirement Accounts:
Many of our donor’s name Ryther as a beneficiary of all or a specified percentage of their IRA, 401(k), 403(b), or another retirement plan. Individuals who inherit retirement plan assets are usually required to pay income tax, so they're often considered among the best assets to leave to charity.

Other ways to name Ryther as a beneficiary:
Bank and investment accounts & commercial annuities:
You can leave a legacy by naming Ryther as a Transfer-on-Death (TOD) or Payable-on-Death (POD) beneficiary on a bank or investment account or a commercial annuity. Check with your financial institution to see if this option is available to you.
Life insurance policies: If you have a life insurance policy that is no longer needed for your family, designating Ryther as a beneficiary is a simple way to support our work.
Charitable Gift Annuity:
There is a way for you to support Ryther and feel confident that you have dependable income in your retirement years. You can do this with a charitable gift annuity.
With a charitable gift annuity, you agree to make a gift to Ryther, and we, in return, agree to pay you (and someone else, if you choose) a fixed amount each year for the rest of your life. The balance is used to support our work.
This type of donation can provide you with regular payments for life and allow Ryther to further our mission. You can also qualify for a variety of tax benefits depending on how you fund your gift.
If you fund your gift annuity with cash or appreciated property, you qualify for a federal income tax deduction if you itemize. In addition, you can minimize capital gains taxes when you fund your gift with appreciated property.
And now, you can fund your gift using your IRA assets. If you are 70½ and older, you can make a one-time election of up to $50,000 to fund a gift annuity. While your gift does not qualify for an income tax deduction, it does escape income tax liability on the transfer and count toward all or part of your required minimum distributions.
Charitable Gift Annuity Information and Video
An Example of How It Works:
Dennis, 75, and Mary, 73, want to contribute to Ryther but also want to ensure that they have dependable income during their retirement years. They fund a $25,000 charitable gift annuity with appreciated stock they originally purchased for $10,000.
Based on their ages, they will receive a payment rate of 5.7%, which means that they will receive $1,425 each year for the remainder of their lives. They are also eligible for a federal income tax charitable deduction of $10,306* when they itemize. Finally, they know that after their lifetimes, the remaining amount will be used to support our mission.
*Based on a 5.2% charitable midterm federal rate. Deductions and calculations will vary depending on your personal circumstances.
Deferred gift annuities:
If you are under the age of 65 and planning for your income needs during retirement, you may want to consider a deferred gift annuity. This allows you to make a gift with payments to begin at a future date—at least one year after the gift is made. The minimum age at which payments may start is 65. Both the annuity rate and amount are set at the time the gift is made.

Charitable remainder trusts:
A charitable remainder trust is a separately managed trust that allows you to make a significant gift toward the future of Ryther's work while providing an income for yourself or loved ones. After transferring cash, securities, or other assets to a trust, a trustee invests the assets, and the trust pays income to you or to individuals you name for life or for a fixed term of years. When the trust terminates, Ryther receives the remainder.
The trust may be a charitable remainder annuity trust (fixed payments) or a charitable remainder unitrust (fixed percentage).
